About Point

Founded in 1937, Point University is a private liberal arts institution that educates students to influence culture for Christ in all spheres of life. In addition to our online programs, which provide a broad, comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for their chosen professions, we operate multiple ground campuses throughout Georgia.

Point University offers accredited associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees taught by dedicated faculty who equip the next generation to take their faith into the marketplace in new and culturally relevant ways – to erase the lines between who they are and what they do so that they see life and mission as one and the same.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY

Following its founding in 1937, Point University devoted attention primarily to the education of ministers, missionaries and other church-related workers. In 1965, the college became an accredited member of the American Association of Bible Colleges (AABC). In 1990, in conjunction with a broadening of the curriculum, the college was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award the associate and baccalaureate degrees. The early childhood and middle grades education program have earned accreditation by the National Council on Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Professional Standards Commission (PSC) of the State of Georgia.

In February 2011, the board of trustees announced that the college’s name would change to Point University on July 1. In fall 2012, the traditional, residential campus relocated to West Point, Georgia, and the growing Greater Valley area.

The University’s curriculum currently offers majors in areas of study ranging from biblical studies to biology. Degree programs are offered for traditional college students, high school students pursuing dual credit enrollment, working adults and graduate level students. Its main campus is located in West Point, Georgia, with various site locations as well as online.

The University has had seven presidents:

  • George W. BonDurant (1937-47)
  • Orvel C. Crowder (1947-55)
  • James C. Redmon (1955-78)
  • Paul K. Carrier (1978-84)
  • James C. Donovan (1984-93)
  • R. Edwin Groover (1993-2006)
  • Dean C. Collins (2006–Present)

OUR MISSION

To educate students for Christ-centered service and leadership throughout the world.

PRESIDENT DEAN COLLINS

Dean C. Collins is a 1979 graduate of Point University. He held the position of interim president at Point from early 2006 until February 2009, when he was appointed president by the University’s board of trustees. Prior to joining the administration in 2006, Collins had served as an advisor to the University and its trustees. In previous years, he served as part of the University’s adjunct faculty and as the interim vice president of student development.

Highlights of Collins’ tenure as president include its current record enrollment of almost 2,000 students, the 2008 launch of the University’s adult-degree program, the 2014 introduction of an online program and the 2016 launch of graduate programs. Collins and the board of trustees led the 2011 relocation and expansion of the college’s main residential campus from Atlanta to West Point to accommodate enrollment growth, expand the physical campus and broaden the University’s athletic offerings. In conjunction with the relocation, the school’s name was changed from Atlanta Christian College to Point University.

After graduating from Point, Collins earned a master’s degree in counselor education from Auburn University. He completed additional graduate work in counseling psychology and marriage and family therapy.

In 1979, Collins founded Auburn Christian Fellowship at Auburn University, a nondenominational campus ministry that continues to thrive today. One of the early campus ministries in the Southeast, ACF provides housing, recreational activities, worship services, counseling, retreats and biblical studies to students.

Collins also founded New Directions Counseling Center in metro Atlanta in 1989. He served as executive director over multiple locations and professionals offering a wide range of behavioral, family and marriage therapy in a Christian environment.

In 1996, Collins began his tenure as vice president of human resources with CheckFree Corporation. He served there, overseeing human resources functions for 3,000 employees, until founding DC Consulting in 1999. In addition to his presidential responsibilities at Point University, he continues his work with DC Consulting. As a consultant, he works with multiple Fortune 500 companies, providing coaching and guidance in the areas of executive leadership, organizational effectiveness and optimization of business relationships.

Raised in Tampa, Fla., Mr. Collins now resides in Lanett, Ala., with his wife, Penny Lane Collins. He has four children—Natalie (who graduated from Point in 2004), Ben, JoAnna, and Sydney—and four grandchildren.
